Thanks for the report (and sorry I lost patience - although I have to say
that I was exaggerating a bit for effect!).

It was worth the experiment. I'm sorry that the new cable didn't help,
though.

At least we can now eliminate that from consideration.

Yes very frustrating.

In the end I put a spare drive in my old machine installed a fresh copy of
XP and then managed to hook up the spare IDE drive which was seen in my old
XP drive with no problem, I then used my USB storage device to copy and
transfer to my new machine, long winded but at least I haven't lost
anything!

Thanks again for your help!

I like happy (well, not totally bad) endings. Glad you're recovering
OK!

I still have somewhere two or three images of other people's disks that
I have rescued by similar means (in one case - accidental reformatting
- it needed disk recovery software). It was long enough ago - the
newest was over two years back - that what I have is almost certainly
quite useless to them now.

Yeah I am getting there slowly thanks.

Think I am going to buy an external hard drive for my new machine and back
up to that, think that will be a lot easier should I have a similar problem
years down the line!
