Vista Home Premium upgrade wont install

I get all the way through the installation to the point of "Starting Windows
for the first time", but the next thing I see is "Windows Vista installation
failed -undoing changes made - you can still use your previous operating
system" (something like that). The advisor says all is OK. This is my
scenario: I wanted to upgrade my hard drive and Windows at the same time so
I backed up my data and replaced my hard drive with a new Maxtor 200gig SATA
drive. I then had to reinstall XP on the new drive so I could install Vista.
I didn't activate XP on the new drive or install any drivers before
attempting to upgrade to Vista. Should I activate and/or install all my
drivers for the clean XP installation before upgrading? Any other advice?

Thanks, - Woodie
