You can't open the attachment from within the email program, or
you can't open the document after saving the attachment?

Assuming you have the appropriate Office programs installed,
take a look at this fix:

i could it not open after saving in documents.
my installed programs are powerpoint, works and word pad.

You can't open the attachment from within the email program, or
you can't open the document after saving the attachment?

If you can't open saved documents, then it's not a Windows Mail problem.
Since you don't have Word or Excel, I suggest you install the free viewers:

Word:

Excel:
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2000/xlviewer.aspx
