Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular
resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.

I don't think it hurts to scan eml files if they have the patch or have
Vista SP1.

Its not as in OE where the entire message store for a given folder is wiped
out if a single message has a virus. If the directory of eml files is
scanned, and one has a virus, then it only would be removed. The database
would need to clear the entry for it, but with the patch, that should not be
an issue.

This would explain why WLM users have not experienced the same
degree of antivirus-related problems. As I understand it, WLM's code
included the KB941090 patch from the start.
You would still have the other problem of server time-outs when
uploading large attachments.
