Vista Home Basic plus PC99 V.90 Data/Fax Modem

I just bought a new computer after using Windows 98 for 8 years and
discovered that my Vista has no fax/scan programming. My bad for not
ordering XP. But, can I install my old disk from my Win98 and make it work?
Has anyone tried this? I'm only an occasional faxer--especially at tax time.
I thought I'd ask before trying to do it. The modem on my new Dell Vista is
Conexant D850 PCI V.92.

No! Please do not do this. If you were able to get this loaded, it's
very likely that it will do more than not work, and you won't like it.

Windows Fax and Scan for Vista is not available on any of the Basic or Home
editions. It's only on Business and Ultimate.

If your system is a new Dell, I would suggest that you contact Dell support
regarding availability of fax software.

If you google Vista Basic Fax, you will find information about other
options. Be aware that writing fax applications, or porting them to
another OS is not trivial, and with the declining Fax market there are fewer
of the needed highly skilled programmers available to do the work.

Apparently, there's a program called SnappyFax that has a 30-day demo and is
around $20, but I also see notes about install problems on Vista Basic.
The demo would be worth trying.

I have briefly tested version 9.03 of the following FAX basic freeware
on Vista.
Seemed to work fine...

Installed and I'll try it tomorrow. I didn't find a scan option with this
9.03 application. Is there any scanning freeware out there?
