Conexant D480 MDC v.9x - when is a modem a fax/modem?

I am working with a relatively new Dell Inpiron 600m. Trying to fax.
Modem is a Conexant D480 MDC v.9x. Does anyone know if I need a
built-in or PCMCIA 'fax/modem' upgrade in order to fax? Or should this
modem do the trick?

Right now, XP's fax console tries to configure and locks up.

Most likely a XP config issue. Suggest you call Dell...
