Vista has Indexing issues

I have been having the problem of Windows Explorer crashing whenever it was
opened, and anything that uses it. I have had the problem on other systems
and it seems to be a problem with the indexer. I just unintalled and have
not crashed again.

If anyone is having problems with Explorer crashing it might be the thing to
try. I will keep the post updated on my progress.

Enjoy the Vista and good luck,

PS. Just a note. The indexer that I am refering to is the one that I loading
from the windows program options. I don't think that the "Indexing Service"
loads by default with Vista.

Is there annother that does load by default that Windows uses?

I think that the Indexing Service is loaded by default but it only
indexes the user's files, you can set it to index more by typing index
in the start-menu search-box and chooseing Indexing Options.

What the differance between that one and the one in Windwos Features is
beyond me.

I think that the optional one indexes more files. I reloaded it as I found
that I still had the same problem just less of one. Whenever the indexer is
on and I open explorer or a dialoge box in a program it crashes. I will just
have to make sure for now that I use the system when it is not indexing. I
wish that you could set it to index at certain times.
Maybe I can turn the service off until I am not using the system.

For your informational consideration,

I find that if I go to Administrative tools/Services and pause the indexing
service until I am not using to system I have a lot better odds on not
crashing/restarting. Then before I take a break or retire for the night I
resume it.

Seems to be working,

My explorer ALWAYS crashes if I search images or videos. Of course an
automatic report goes off to MS, but I've had nothing back. My reliability
monitor has lots of pretty colours as a result.

There were a couple of builds some time ago that crashed for a lot of people
with indexing. I seem to recall setting to US English settings stopped it -
or of course shutting off indexing.
