Vista, flash player and websites

What's with the constant messages of sites to update the flash player to the
latest version? I do that and see the animation at the flash site, but am
never able to actually play flash movies on websites. And it's on major
sites, not out of the way ones.

I think it's looking for flash player 8 and vista's flash player is 9?
 
The installer isn't completing it's job. Go to
c:windows/system32/macromed/flash and doubleclick FlashUtil9b.exe and it
should work from then on.
