Vista Explorer, VERY Annoying, is there a work around?

I'm generally pleased with Vista, but the most annoying thing is when you
open Explorer it insists on expanding the directory tree, which I then have
to colapse. Is there a setting or registry setting that stops explorer
expanding the directory tree?

I do not see that problem. From where are you opening Explorer (how, what
icon/shortcut are you using).

When I open Explorer from within System Tools it opens to the Documents
folder and displays the first level of sub documents.

When I open Explorer by clicking on Computer, it opens the drives on
Computer.

Clicking on various shortcuts has differing results.
