I cannot send any emails in Windows Vista without having to close Outlook
Express. Thats the only way an it will send. Any suggestions please. I have
turned off anti-virus scanning .
thanks
Jan

You mean Windows Mail.
Is it set to send immediately?
Tools - Options - Send
[x] Send messages immediately
ok

It is impossible to have Outlook Express installed on a Vista computer.
You may want to review and restate your issue.
By what means do you want to send email?

Yes, everything is ticked, i've never had this problem before. It worked for
a while when i first used Vista, now it doesnt.

Do you get error messages when trying to send? If so, show the full
error messages here.

Are messages piling up in your Outbox?

What if any antivirus programs do you have?

Not normally any error messages, I am using Norton 360 anti virus. The
messages do pile up in the out box, and whilst they are there I cannot
send/receive any messages. So I have to close windows mail, wait a few
seconds, then re-open it. The messages will then send, and then I can receive
again.

Most of the Norton antivirus programs are among those that cause
problems in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately.

Click on Tools, then Accounts, then your email account, then
Properties. if there's no check mark in the box before Include
this account when receiving mail or synchronizing, click on this
box and then Apply. Click on OK and then Close.

Click on Tools, then Options, then Send. If there's no check
mark in the box before Send messages immediately, click on
this box and then Apply. Click on OK.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled.

I have had a look and I dont appear to have Outlook Express to de-install.
So, if i un-install Norton, should this cure the problem. Norton was already
pre installed on my laptop when I bought it, along with Vista

Disregard the part about Outlook Express. It doesn't apply to you.

Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee
and Norton security programs. Those will need to be
uninstalled, not just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

I've tried as you suggested, de-installed Norton and installed from the link
you gave me, but still no joy. I am totally lost at waht to do now.

Norton probably messed up the account. Go to Tools | Accounts and remove
the account. Close WinMail the reopen WinMail and add the account back.

While Norton was installed on your system, it probably
corrupted your email account. Delete that account, restart
Windows Mail, then recreate the account.

Thanks for your feedback.
As you found out, Norton likes to leave its legacy.
