Vista Drivers for a Fujitsu fi4120c scanner (or lack of....)

I have an fi-4120c document scanner which is about 5 years old now and
originally cost £450. Since acquiring a new laptop with Vista already
installed on it, I've discovered that there are no vista drivers available
for this scanner.

If I want to continue using it I have two choices currently, either install
a copy of Windows XP and utilise the manufacturer drivers or continue using
Vista and replace what was a very expensive, good quality, duplex scanner.

I'm not wholly impressed by the lack of Vista support by Fujitsu here for
the fi-4210c, any other suggestions? Are there any other 3rd party scanner
drivers I can use to get this scanner working in Vista? There's absolutely
nothing wrong with the scanner, it all works just fine under XP, it seems
that Fujitsu just can't be bothered to support customers who have to move on
in certain other technology areas, e.g. laptop, OS etc.

Why should they continue to support a five year old product? You've got
to draw a line somewhere otherwise it just gets stupid.

Have yopu tried installing the working pre-VISTA drivers using:

Compatibility mode on the setup exe file for the software and setting
it to XP with SP2

and

Run as Administrator (right mouse click on the installation startup
file and select Run as Administrator).

I've got older software working this way. If your Fujitsu used TWAIN to
communicate there should be no problem at all in getting the scanner
working -- I've got a scsi connected HP SJ5P working this way using the
even older HP Deskscan 2.9 software.

And I've just got my Logitech MX-310 optical mouse buttons working as
they did under XP by installing the Logitech SetPoint 3.3 software
setting Compatibility to XP with SP2.

My very first B&W scanner was a Fujitsu -- built like a Rolls Royce
.....

Those guys make drivers for old scanners.

Unfortunately, my scanner isn't listed in their supported scanners list.

Thanks for pointing this out though, I'll have to keep an eye on it and see
if they offer support in the future.

Yeah, I've tried this and the driver just refuses to install.

Have even gone through a manual update/install of the driver using device
manager but Vista won't actually start the driver, I get an error code 10.

I guess if I really need to use it, one possible option is to use Virtual
Server or VMWare with XPSP2 installed and run the scanner through a virtual
USB port. Pain in the rear though.

the driver just refuses to install.

Even with compatibility mode set to XP?

Luckily I've not so far had anything refuse to install or to work
afterwards -- I must be lucky <g>

I've just had a look at:

http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computing/peripherals/scanners/acces
sories/prosoft.html

which indicates that that software package includes TWAIN drivers. If
that is so you really ought to be able to get the scanner working,
although the FAX & SCAN module of VISTA will not see the scanner.
However this is how I got my HP SJ5P working both under W2K, XP and now
VISTA and the very old, pre NT, software works fine for scanning and
also the copy utility works.

And I see that your scanner is apparently scsi connected, as is my
SJ5P. You might want to look for more uptodate TWAIN files from the
Adaptec website under scsi software.

I suggest you have another look at this.

You'll find TWAIN drivers listed at:

http://www.fujitsu.com/us/services/computing/peripherals/scanners/acces
sories/

Are those what you used?

One thing that may help is to disable Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
in Services, at least until the scanner is installed. I had to do this
with W2K although not subsequently.

My scanner has both a USB connection as well as a SCSI connection, currently
I'm using the USB connection though as I don't have a SCSI card for my PC.

Neither the listed TWAIN or ISIS drivers are certified for Vista and don't
appear to install the correct drivers for my scanner when installed using
compatibility mode.

Hmm, ok - good tip. I'll have to give this a try and see if this works.

Many thanks!

Well I'm sure that mine for the SJ5P aren't since they came out before
even XP existed!

I have a 4120c and just got a new Vista laptop. I tried a number of things to get it to work with the old driver but it would not.

Then I decided as a last ditch effort to go to the Fujitsu site and download the 5120c driver for vista. After I did that programs recognize it, the scanning tool works, etc.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes for you. It saved me $1,000.
