Vista does not boot (bluescreen)

After upgrading my windows xp to vista home premium, my notebook does no
longer boot (a bluescreen is shown during boot).

I suspect, that this might be because I did not uninstall ZoneAlarm before
upgrading (didn't know it was not compatible).

Is there any way to disable the ZoneAlarm service, so that vista will boot
without starting that service?

Thanks for any hints,
Martin

Martin:
Press F8 during boot and choose "Safe mode".
If you succeed, uninstall ZoneAlarm and reboot.

Sorry, forgot to mention it: It also bluescreens when booting in "Safe mode".

In the meantime I made a rollback of the upgrade, and deinstalled ZoneAlarm
and some other applications (just to be sure). I will make another attempt at
upgrading the system this evening.

Hi Martin--

If you cannot boot this Vista (your post seems to indicate "after upgrading"
that the Vista home premium has *never booted--is that correct? So I'm
assuming you've never had a working Home Premium on that box is that right?

If you have info from ZA that they aren't compatible with Vista--how
ridiculous of them after all this time--then I would uninstall ZA from the
legacy OS ***before attempting the upgrade.

Apparently they haven't gotten the concept fully that Vista has RTM'd from
this goofy page (this company has no excuse because they've had enough code
to get Vista compatible for a very long time:

http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/vista.jsp

If you have booted Vista Home Premium successfully, and set up programs and
settings I'd try a Startup Repair from the DVD. If you have not, I'd just
uninstall ZA and repeat the upgrade process.

Out of interest, how are you "rolling back" Im temptuously close to
upgrading my Stable XP to the delicious looking Vista, but I need a back
out plan in case things go wrong.

At some point, vista automagically found out that the upgrade did not
succeed and suggested to make a rollback to the previous OS. Before that
iirc, I have also seen the rollback option either in the boot menu (when
pressing F8 for more options) or when booting from the vista DVD.
I'm not completely sure where the rollback option can be found. But in any
case, the rollback worked well.

Once I was back in XP, I was able to uninstall ZoneAlarm and some other
software (just to be sure). I then restarted the upgrade, and this time
everything went well (I'm now running vista).

correct, it never started up after the upgrade from XP.

It seems they now have a beta version of their firewall software which is
compatible with vista. But it's disappointing that they still do not have a
compatible product. Since my zonealarm subscription expired some days ago, I
will now look for another product.

settings I'd try a Startup Repair from the DVD. If you have not, I'd just
uninstall ZA and repeat the upgrade process.

Please see my other post: I was able to rollback the vista upgrade
installation, uninstall zonealarm in XP and restart the upgrade - and it
finished successfully.
