vista desktop

Paul

I have vista and am often finding that when using windows explorer or
programs such as word
every now and then when I click on a directory or use the menus it comes up
with not responding
and wipes out the whole of my desktop, leaving me with the only option of
using
ctrl-alt-del and logoff, restart or shutdown

is this a common fault with this pile of crap?

Pile yes, common no.
There are other common problems like USB failures and very slow file
operations.
And cluttered difficult Aero screens.
Aero should fly away and never come back.

Hi Paul,

Common? Sort of - these explorer crashes happen when a system is being
affected by malware, bad IE plug-ins, spyware, incompatible skins, shell
extensions, etc, and also some utilities such as the google desktop. First
step is to scan the system under safe mode to remove unwanted crap, and
uninstall anything that imbeds in the windows shell. A clean system will not
have this problem.

When it does crash, rather than restarting, just click "new task" on the
applications tab, type "explorer.exe" and click ok.
