Well, can you pin the start of the slowdown to something that happened
around that time, example a program install, any settings changed etc?
Is there a lot of disk drive activity?
If Vista started off okay and slowed down it may be nothing to do with
the OS itself, on the other hand the media presentation problems may
indicate problems within Vista's DRM system or the manufacturers' video
drivers. I believe there may have been updates to some things that might
explain why it started off well and then became slow.
If the media is something you downloaded check for spyware / adware. You
may need to use independent software for this as "Defender" is about as
much use as an ashtray on a motorbike and a firewall doesn't stop that
kind of thing. Many Antivirus programs won't catch spy or adware either.
In fact on a couple of systems I had to shut down defender to rectify
problems.
One thing that slowed 2 of mine to a crawl was drive "Indexing" (Right
click on drive icon and uncheck box). No idea why this happened, but
when unchecked things speeded up considerably, between that and Defender
Vista became impractical.
Someone might recognize the symptoms right away, hope they do, but if
you can think of any other clues as to when the trouble started it may
help. Obviously if this a a problem that started since you have had the
machine and it was okay at first then is "Should not" be a driver
problem unless you have installed any, newer is not "Always" better with
some drivers, and it sounds like your original setup was alright. Do you
have anything like Norton running?
