vista crashes!!!

when using my laptop with vista home premium, i encounter frequent crashes in
which the computer will just shut down and restart itself with no input from
the user. also i get a blue screen with jagged lines shooting across it and
then the computer restarts itself. one instance when it recovered from a
crash, i could not use the fingerpad to controll the pointer. any help on
this subject will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Hi,

By default, Windows will restart on a serious error. This behavior can be
changed in the advanced system settings, but it's more important to find out
what is going wrong first. Any text from the error screens can help diagnose
this, and also check the event viewer's system and application logs for
clues as to what may be going wrong.
