Vista Complete PC Backup

Six months ago, I successfully carried out a Complete PC backup with no
problems. Last week I attempted to repeat this, but the backup froze after
writing 113GB (out of a possible 167GB) to my hard drive backup (750GB
capacity). I have repeated this exercise many times, going through stages
where I reformatted the backup drive, used a different drive, physically
removed and reinstalled the backup drive etc. Each time I checkdisked all
drives as I had to do a disruptive shutdown due to the freeze.

The normal backup to this drive works OK. Due to the type of failure, no
event viewer or error messages could be found. The ASR log does give an
error in [INFO ] 0x498 - ***** CVssAsrAPI::OnIdentify *****

[FUNCT] 0x498 - ENTER - _GetElementData
[ERROR] 0x498 - bootlib.cpp#515 [0x490]
[FUNCT] 0x498 - EXIT - _GetElementData [0x490]

Has anyone got any ideas on how to solve this problem?
