Vista Complete Backup - why no NAS?

I've got an Iomega NAS on my network and would very much like for this to be
my destination for the Vista Complete Backup. However, the only valid
destinations are another physical hard drive or a CD / DVD. Ironically, the
Backup Files option does in fact allow me to enter a network drive path and
can see my NAS just fine. Why does the Complete Backup not allow for this?
Please advise! Thanks in advance.

This is indeed a reason why backing up to mapped drives isn't supported
with Windows Vista.

According to Microsoft, to use a NAS device as a backup target, you
need to create the share with "Full Control" privileges for the user whose
credentials they want to connect with.


If this doesn't work, contact your NAS manufacturer to ask them for
upgraded firmware based on 3.x version of Samba.

For "Complete PC backup"? Or just to backup some files?

In my case I'd like to backup to a Windows 2003 server with nearly 3TB
of storage, rather then to a local hard drive or removable media.

Did I miss something or is this not possible?

Carey, not sure I understand your statement "This is indeed a reason why

problem setting up my share for Full Control (in fact, it already is)...it's
just that the Complete Backup Wizard only indicates physical drivers and DVD
/ CD. Just doesn't make any sense....what good is this for people who only
have 1 physical drive? (fortunately, I do have 2). It does say that you
can't have your destination be the drive you're backing up (of course), but
if the point of having a backup is to put it somewhere other than the
physical machine itself, why did MS setup this complete backup feature this
way? Again, the file backup feature totally allows for NAS. Perhaps this
will be addressed in SP1? This feature really works pretty well....I like it
alot, but I'm having to do my backup to my second physical drive and then
move that entire directory to my NAS....then move it back when I want to do
weekly incremental backups....it's a real pain since I want to use my second
drive for other purposes than a backup.
