I have a couple of programmes which are Vista compatible and do not start
anymore. The program opens and closes after 2 seconds. A new install doesn't
solves the problem. What is the problem?

What are the programs?

1. The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

2. A new install of what, the programs?

3. If this is a sudden change and you can't answer #1 above, try a
System Restore to when things work. To run System Restore, go to the
Start Orb and in the Start Search box type "System Restore" without the
quotes. System Restore will appear in the Programs result. Click on it,
allow the UAC prompt, and follow the wizard.

4. What programs? Have you spoken to their respective tech support people?

On a similar, if more specific note, I'm new to Vista and am ... frustrated
by UAC. I log in as the administrator. When I boot up, I get a notice that
Windows is preventing certain programs from starting. This includes my
anti-virus program, PCTools Antivirus v3.1.0.14. The message states that "an
unidentified program wants access to my computer". Every time I boot, I have
to enable this software that's supposed to be "Vista capable" (made for it).

Obviously, this is a pain in the butt. What I want to know is, is there a
way I can tell UAC that this (and select other programs) are O.K. and not to
bother me about it EVER again?

As I understand it, you cannot do this. You should contact PCTools
Antivirus tech support because a truly Vista-compatible antivirus will
not have this problem. Recommended antivirus programs that are known to
work well with Vista are NOD32, Kaspersky, and Avast if you want a free one.

Thanks for the disappointing news. Out goes PCTools, in goes Avast. On a side
note: Just from reading about it, I'm impressed by Avast 4.5. A new resident
protection module is in this version. It's a "Network Shield". For all intent
and purposes, it's "Snort lite", an intrusion detection system (although I
doubt it's that comprehensive or difficult to manage). Too bad it looks like
that feature is only on the (paid) Professional version. I'll pay for it
eventually if I like it.

I have several other programs, of a less critical nature, that are caught by
UAC in this manner. From what you're saying, they're only programs that
aren't "fully" compatible with Vista? Does Vista have an "Approved" list?
Anyway, I'll deep 6 & replace 'em. Thanks again.
