Vista Codecs

Hi PcMan,

I downed and installed the "Advanced Vista Codec Package 4.3.4" and guess
what : nothing changed.
I still cannot play my media files such as :
- 15 seconds mpg-files that I made with my photo-camera.
- Divx files
- ra.ram files
- rm.ram files
-etc

I installed "Advanced Vista Codec Package 4.3.4" as is, without any
modifications during the setup.
Should I have done something ? I am far from being an expert in these
matters you know. Please be very basic when it comes to explaining things.

Thanks

After having installed the Vista Codec Pack 437, I have also installed Media
Player Classic.
And suddenly I can play most of the media files.

That means that :
- Vista Codec Pack + Windows Media Player is not 100% sufficient.
- Vista Codec Pack + VLC player is absolutely not sufficient
- Vista Codec Pack + Media Player Classic = almost perfect - does most
things ??

What a user-friendlyness
Nothing to be proud of MS !!!

Same here. I have installed dozens of codec packs including the Vista
specific one. I still cannot play .mov, .rm or some types of avi files. this
is quite annoying as I have to keep booting back into XP to get certain
files to work. I am cripled by the number of codecs I can chooes when I am
authorind my files. And I still cannot get good enough quality out of the
ones I can use. Is there a solution to this most annoying problem in Vista.
I hate having to guess which codec will do the job when I am authoring my
movies and then finding out that is does not work or it is too low a
quality. I am also not an expert but the settings I had in XP should work in
Vista. Also. i tried the suggestion to have Media Player 6 installed but it
is not included in the Vista codec pack.

Mov files are Apple and often require the Quick time player to play
correctly. RM files are Real Media and often require the Real Media
player. This is due to LICENSING issues which is why Media player
doesn't play them natively. Many avi files are really just wrappers
with divX files inside, get a DivX player. That should solve about 90%
of the common 'can't play' issues most people face.

The reality is you need at MINIMUM three additional players to play
most common video types you'll typically encounter in your travels on
the web and in newsgroups if you download video material in the common
formats.

A Quick Time, RM and DivX player in ADDITION to Media Player or any of
the many far better players like VLC, XnView or GOM. Why Microsoft
can't create a decent, all supportive media player is one of life's
great mysteries.

It seems to me you answered your own question - LICENSING (and the
ever-present love/hate relationship between MS and the others). :)

Cheers, Dave
