Vista and Wake on LAN

I have my computer set to turn on remotely. For those who don't know, it
involves a bios setting to enable wake up via a signal ("Magic Packet") sent
over the network. This all works fine in Vista (as it did in XP), but only
if the computer is completely off. However, if the computer is in sleep
mode, sending the wake up signal doesn't do anything.

This question may be a little esoteric for this group, but I've searched and
can't find any answers anywhere. Is there some setting that will allow me
to remotely wake the computer from sleep mode? Thanks.

Tim,

As far as I know WOL only turns on your system with Vista (at least
thats the only thing the Vista documentation mentions). Have you checked to
see if there are any specific WOL settings in your system BIOS?

Yes, there are a number of bios settings relating to wake up - WOL has to be
specifically enabled in the bios. But nothing that might relate to wake up
from sleep state. There must be a solution to this problem. It's a little
ironic that in order to turn on my computer, it must be completely off
rather than just sleeping.

I figured out the solution to this, and it's pretty easy. When in sleep
mode, the NIC is still active. So, all you have to do is send some signal,
like a ping, to your computer over the network, and the computer will wake.
But first you must enable the NIC by going to its properties in the device
manager, power management tab, and checking "Allow this device to wake the
computer." This is not checked by default.
