Vista and Terminal Services?

I've heard some Vista features such as Aero will not show up on Remote
Desktop when going from an XP box to a Vista box.

What is the difference in using Terminal Services vs. Remote Desktop? Does
it lack any Vista features for the above setup?

I'm guessing Vista to Vista is the best way to go for getting full benefits?

Hi Brett,

Correct, the Aero interface does not work over the RD protocol. RD relies on
terminal services to work, there's no real differences here. Certain
features rely on direct generation from the hardware, it's not something you
can do over a lan. An example is Aero, the graphics card on the machine
being accessed is not used over the lan, the display is generated by the
system doing the accessing. The Aero effect is generated directly on the
system that houses the OS, not the remote machine.

Thanks Rick. So even if both machines have Vista and capable video cards,
when I access VistaB machine via RD, I still won't see Aero in the RD
window? I'm guessing that will be the only feature not available through
RD. 3D and flip should be there right?

Once I have my setup configured, I'll post back what the experience is like.

Once Vista is installed and configured for remote access from within VPC, all you need to do to get Aero Glass running is to connect
to the virtual machine using the Remote Desktop Connection (RDP 6) client. If your host, or physical, machine supports Aero Glass,
the virtual machine will allow you to take advantage of it, giving you transparent blurred windows, mouse-over taskbar previews, and
cool windows+tab animation!

How is that possible? RDP is doing what made RDP a great remote utility. It does not only capture the screen in bitmaps and then
transfer them over. Instead, it sends raw window information and the windows are drawn by the RDP client on your computer. In
Windows Vista, that raw window information now includes 3D instructions.

In all fairness this is not exactly new technology for Microsoft. They were already doing something similar with the XBOX 360 media
center extender (any media center extender uses a special RDP session). However, Windows Vista is their first OS to take advantage
of this technology in its RDP client.

Now that it is possible to send 3D commands over a remote terminal session, who knows what we will see in the future. Some day we
may be able to play 3D games over a RDP session.

I've read the article and it seems there isn't anything in particular the
remote machine needs to do. However, it isn't working. When I'm at the
Vista machine, Aero and 3D Flip work. On the remote XP machine, I have an
NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5700 with 128MB memory. That should do fine but no Aero
or Flip. When I hit the Window key + tab, it just tabs around in the
current window or highlights applications running on the task bar.
