Vista Acer Laptop won't boot.

Bought the laptop from best buy last week. It's an Acer duo-core, pretty
nice. After installing reccomended Vista updates, my bios boots, but after
that, I get a black screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner.

I ran the acer recovery program on the computer and worked fine until I ran
the updates again. Same problem.

I recognize Vista is fairly new, but I expected more from it. There isn't a
whole lot of changes except some Mac rip-offs. I loved XP when it came out
because it NEVER CRASHED, EVER! I guess we are back to the days of WIN98 and
before where your system is unreliable.

If this has happened, or if anyone knows about it, please let me know.

PS- One more thing. I love how I can't even change back to XP on the
computer, because Acer has no drivers for it on their website! Awesome!

Most likely, you need a BIOS update in the mix too. Did you check that out?

I think it's one of the updates causing your problem.
Restore one more time.
Install the updates one at a time, rebooting after each, and making a note,
until it happens again.
The last update installed is your culprit.
Restore again.
Don't install the update that causes the problem.

Lotta trouble, I know, but I don't know how else to determine what the
problem is.

Good luck.

i just purchased the acer extensa 5420 for $499 at best buy. lots of bang for
your buck. the dreaded blackscreen is a common problem and addressed in the
customer review section of this laptop on bestbuy.com i had the same
problem. apparently the problem is caused by incapatability with the ati
graphics card and vista (???) so people say. others say it is a problem in
the power management system. the fix seems to be an upgrade to the bios
(flashing the bios). check your bios and see what version. if it is 1.14
that is problematic. i switched my 1.14 bios version out for the newer one
1.16 which should take care of the black screen problem. i contacted acer on
line support and the techie gave some cock and bull story of how it may be a
bad video card or a bad monitor connection to the host unit. i will let you
know if the 1.16 bios version was the ticket or not. i hope it is from the
others that claim it is. take care, e.j.
