Viruse scan program freezes at different points durring scan even durring scan from symantec website

Ran viruse scan program and came back and found unfinished scan and everything frozen. Tried to close window got NON RESPONSIVE PROGRAM had to manually turn off computer. This happens everythime the viruse scan is run. I deleted program and re-installed it from original disc no luck. Most of the time the scan stops at windows update otherwise I have no other noticable problems HELP! Running Windows XP and Norton 2002
Norton tech help was no help. WMJCOOk@AOL
