Virus

I have a virus (or worm etc.) on my WinXP laptop which randomly causes odd
things to happen on startup such as sounding a high pitch squeal like
microphone feedback or music thru the computer's speakers for a few seconds,
causing bubble messages which should appear in the lower right corner of my
screen to appear in the upper left corner instead, and placing a black
square icon in my tray.

Any help or suggestions as to where I can get help to find and remove this
virus would be appreciated.

I do have Norton Antivirus installed but it doesn't detect it.

Does anybody know of a place where one can enter the symptoms and get back
possible viruses?

Thanks in advance.

Usually, you need an error message but try www.symantec.com, click support.
They do have antivirus area.

If your Norton Antivirus is up to date with the latest definitions, have you
tried scanning your system for viruses?

Definitions are up to date, I've done full scans several times, and I've
looked in the Symanatec. Found no help.

Thanks for your suggestions.

The first one sounds (no pun intended) like feedback. You might try
lowering your volume settings. I know you probably don't have an integrated
microphone or any mic attached but under certain conditions, speakers can
have the same effect as a mic. If you don't have a speaker icon in the
notification area (formerly known as systray) go to Sounds and Audio Devices
in Control Panel, click Advanced under Device Volume, check to see if any of
the volume controls are much beyond the mid range, if they are, try lowering
them and see if that resolves that issue.

As to the other issues, is there anything new you've installed lately or
perhaps removed. If these are recent issues, have you tried using System
Restore to take you back to a time prior to when this began. Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

This honestly doesn't sound like a virus or worm to me.
