Hi Jennifer,

Free virus removal tools:

Also, you may use this free on-line scanner:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Symantec also distributes many free removal tools that are virus-specific:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html

Many are best run in Safe mode to minimize interference. Most will resist
removal in normal mode where they are active.

How to start in Safe mode:

| how do you get rid of a virus?

For a start, there are anti virus News Groups specifically for this type of discussion.

microsoft.public.security.virus
alt.comp.virus
alt.comp.anti-virus

Additionally your post lacks details.

What virus ?
What anti virus software
What is the fully qualified name and path of the infected file ?
Yada, yada....

Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

I'm not sure what kind of virus it is. When I turn on my lab top McAfee says,
"McAfee ActiveSheild has detected a virus your computer. We recommend that
you use the scan feature to scan all drives of your computer for viruses".
When I scan it McAfee does not detect it.

Hi Jennifer :-)
I'm not trying to be a smart a_ _ but you need a real Anti-virus program.
(McCrappy's corparate versions I understand is very good, but what you buy
for $19 or $29 at the local store is garbage).
http://www.eset.com/home/home.htm

Download the trial version (fully functional for 30 days) disconnect from
the internet and disable McCrappy from starting with windows, then install
NOD32, reconnect to the internet and update NOD and scan your system with
it. You have 30 days to see which one you like better (but I already know
what your answer will be).

Option #2
Use an online scanner to double check McCrappy
A link for free online virus and trojan scanners.

and trying to install another AV app, whilst another is installed can lead
to all sorts of further problems
