virus scan

I have a machine with office 2000 running and when i
start or open a spreadsheet or document in excel or word,
it has a meesage in the lower left corner
saying 'requesting virus scan' and this seem to take
forever. is this a setting which can be switched off or
is it from nortons av software. thanks.....

I had exactly this problem but somehow it went away. The culprit is Norton
Anti Virus which you have configured to check Office docs.
I cannot explain how the following solved my problem but this is what I did:
Deleted the shortcut in the recently used program section of Start
Started Excel from the All Programs section of Start.
Excel stated in real time, as did Word which was also affected.
