Virus protection

I was told by Gary I needed to uninstall McAfee's and use this free
anti-virus. I haven't done it yet. I understand what is going on and why I
need to do so. I have the site saved to favorites. My question is....Will
McAfees and/or Nortons ever be compatible with Windows Mail? McAfees came
already installed on my computer. If I remove it from my computer, will it
be lost to me forever? I guess in my mind I trust McAfees and Nortons
because they are the big names in AV and I have used them for years. I hate
to loss a year's free subscription to McAfee.

Gary is convinced that McAfee is not compatible with Vista. I assure you
that the current version is and the upcoming 2008 products even add 64-bit
compatibily for Vista - about to be released. I've been using McAfee on my
Vista Ultimate since day 1 without incident. I use Windows Mail
exclusively.

Some (lucky) people have no problems with McAfee or Norton.
All I can tell you is that in the past 7 months, hundreds of users
have posted here with severe mail problems, and when they
uninstalled their non-compatible antivirus, their problem magically
went away!

If the antivirus uninstall, followed by a re-creation of the corrupted
mail account, does not produce the expected relief, you can
reinstall the antivirus of your choice.

You should have received a McAfee install CD. If not, contact
McAfee support and ask them how are you supposed to reinstall
the program. Also, the larger ISPs all offer free downloadable
antivirus programs to their customers.

As far as I'm concerned, the free Avast antivirus is just as good
as the big name antivirus products, and certainly much less of
a resource hog.

Peter, why am I having problems with Windows Mail then? I haven't used
McAfee before I have been a loyal Norton user since day #1 of my computer
use. My subscription to Norton was about to run out. Since McAfee is free
for a year on this new computer, I decided to give it a try. Do you have a
reason why I am having this problem with Window Mail? 2-3 times a day I have
to re-boot because the messages I create or reply to have only the frame and
no guts to it.

Windows Mail settings in Tools/Options/Security - set to Internet and
uncheck Block images? If you are getting images totally blocked then you
may have adjusted the Parental Controls somehow and given yourself a child's
privileges. Assuming you have privacy service installed og=f course. I
don't and have never used it.

You see lots of posts because people do strange things with their email.
Like leaving 350 emails in their inbox, fail to mention that the emails
contain risque attachments etc. etc. There are lots of reasons why people
have problems and often it is, I admit, McAfee to blame, but in many case,
it was only doing its job, in oither cases the users haven't set the
applications up correctly.

MacAfee and Norton will always claim that they work with Vista and Windows
Mail. Sooner or later they will have an update that allows them to mess up
Windows Mail on your computer. They both plant hooks too deeply into the
operating system, slowing everything down and eventually causing a disaster.

I've been using Norton 360 with Vista Office since it became available.
Haven't had any problems yet. I used to hear the same thing ('replace Norton
Internet Security') when I was running that on my XP machine, but didn't have
problems there either.

One comment however re Norton: if you had an earlier version of Norton, or a
different Norton product on your PC, and then installed a Norton product on
top of it, you can have troubles. The Norton Uninstall feature of their
software is less than stellar at removing all traces of their programs.
Norton provides a 'Removal Tool' on their website, that will remove all
traces of a previous Norton product (exception - SystemWorks). They also
provide detailed instructions on how to install multiple Norton products -
search the Norton site for them. I realize you would like to keep McAfee,
avoiding throwing away a product that may work. Perhaps McAfee has something
similar to Norton's Removal Tool. I'd check their site.

Keep in mind, the problems with Windows Mail is not the antivirus programs -
it's Windows Mail. Microsoft opted to no longer support it (after only 6
months). A slightly different problem is that the replacement they're
touting, Windows Live Mail (not to be confused with Hot Mail) is still in
beta, and has a bunch of bugs of its own. Look for some relief when Service
Pack 1 comes out - The media is reporting that may happen in January.

anti-virus program, but these two are a special case. They'll cause
problems even with email scanning turned off.

Does Norton "get its hooks" into the operating system on a Vista system like
it does on an XP system? On an XP system, Norton is far to intrusive, I
wonder if it's the case with Vista.

Yes, that is precisely why both Norton and McAfee cause problems with
Vista's Windows Mail.

I learned tonite tha t my e mail problems are that Windows email and Norton
are not compatible. I should go to outlook express. I am a rppkie Is this
difficult. Should i ask Cogeco for help.

Sounds like Gary just doesn't like Norton or McAfee. I have had Norton
running with Windows mail since Vista's release. No problems. I think some
people are so stuck on the idea that Vista Can't be at fault that they blame
it on other programs. I know that If you are running Vista Home Premium with
only 1 gb of memory it can cause all kinds of unexplanable problems. After
doing a lot of research today I have noticed a common thread. When Memory
resources start running low, it can cause problems in numerous areas.

For about six months I ran Vista successfully with only 512 MB RAM.
I currently have 1.0 GB, and have never had a low memory error.

"Low memory" errors when running Windows Mail tend to be bogus,
and are often caused by a corrupted email database. Surprisingly,
when you uninstall McAfee or Norton, the error goes away.
Coincidence you say?

None of the regular supporters of Outlook Express or Windows Mail like
Norton or McAfee. We will all tell you to uninstall them.
