Virus problem questions

Bill Case

Hi,
I'm a novice on this stuff and need some help.

Four days ago, AVG virus shield on my computer (Win 2000 o/s, standalone),
detected and got rid of Trojan Horse Backdoor.VB.9.N. in files named
wowex32.exe and apropo*?*.exe . Everything was ok as far as computer
operation went.

Two days ago, while online, the AVG shield warned me of a virus, again
Trojan Horse Backdoor.VB.9.N. Almost immediately a program named "power
scan" that I hadn't seen before popped up along with some other piece of
crap called "internet optizmer".

I tried uninstalling, deleting things, and used AVG to run a virus check,
but then the real problem became evident. Something was taking up nearly 100
pct of the cpu time - AVG virus scan ran very slow as did everythng else.
Apparnetly, the two programs using the up the cpu were internet explorer and
windows explorer.

I couldn't figure out how to cure things - I deleted the virus file and AVG
found nothing else, but the problem with the cpu time being used at near 100
pct continued. I did a clean re-install and that cured it but that's a big
ordeal in itself.

Does anybody know what happend and how to avoid it? I've got all the MS
patches etc, and I had AVG running, and I strill got whacked by this thing.
How do you cure whatever is taking up the cpu without going through a
re-install?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

BC

Horse Backdoor.VB.9.N seems to be not well known on Dr Google's
premises...

Did you activate/install a firewall?

In any case, a clean new install of Windows etc. is the only clean,
reliable solution.

No it is not.
Clean the system using Spybot S&D.

If you assume that a backdoor has been active and used
by an intruder ~ you can never be too sure about the
ability of any removal software to be thorough enough.

The OP must decide how important his security is to him
an act accordingly.

....I would rebuild as Roy has suggested ~ but that's just me.
