Hello, I am having a great deal of trouble with my computer, I assume it's a
virus or trojan that is affecting the system, changing settings at will and
so on. Norton antivirus has not been able to deal with the problem because
it says another process is using the c drive. I tried to format c drive but
it also gives me the message that the volume is being used by another process
and can't lock drive. I am unable to use my computer as it starts to behave
in an erratic way. I would like to format the disk how do I proceed?.
Please help I have xp home edition. Thank you very much for your assistance

Have you tried system restore?

Hi Elly,

You can only format from outside of Windows. If you have a retail copy of
WinXP Home, then boot the system with it and start the installer. At the
point where it asks where to install, delete the existing partition, then
create a new one from the free space. Format will be done as part of the
initial setup. If you have an OEM restore disk, you need to follow the
manufacturer's instructions for use.

Why do you assume it's a trojan or virus? What are the symptoms? Formatting
is a drastic step to take for something that can usually be fixed.
