Virus or Spyware...Help

G

Guest

My friend has a 2 year old Dell.
He reloaded XP.
Tried to reload Norton...no go.
Very Slow.
Gets a message that says "You (or a program) needs to access
'wick.3d.nailed.org' and another that wants to go to 's.idolz-hq-net'..he
cancels
both but they keep coming back. Connect speed is 28kbs. System is very slow.
I ran spybot and adaware and got rid of some stuff...not all that many.
How can I get Norton to run to get a good virus scan. He is using "2003"
Thanks in advance for your ideas.

1) Download the following three items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend signature files.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

Adaware SE (personal free version)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Dowload the signature files (pattern files) by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt202.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adware with the latest definitions.
3) If you are using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
5) Using both the Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of your
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart your PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of your platform using both the
Trend Sysclean utility and Adaware
7) If you are using WinME or WinXP,Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot your PC.
9) If you are using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point

You can also try some of the below online scanners.

Trend:

F-Secure:

McAfee:

You should disconnect the computer from the internet while you install XP.
Then turn on the XP firewall and install an antivirus program before
connecting to the internet.

Honestly, the safest bet is to do a full system reformat and make sure all
the "crap" is gone.

Ditto. I couldn't agree more. Despite the number of times you see
it recommended for all sorts of problems, reformatting and
reinstalling is almost never the right solution. The
recommendation is nothing more than the equivalent of saying "I
don't know how to fix your problem."

Formatting the hard drive to solve a virus or spyware problem is
rather like using an axe to trim one's fingernails. Sure, it'll
probably get the job done, but it's rather messy...., and almost
always unnecessary.
