Virus letters

I have received a couple of different e-mails from different sources saying
that a virus (different each time) was sent from my computer. I do not have
these recipients in my address book and my up-to-date AV checks out that all
is okay. Is this for real? Obviously I don't want to open the attachment
that accompanies them. Thanks

I don't think it is real.
Take easy, nothing dangerous.

That is a fairly common occurrence. It usually means that someone with your
address in their contacts is sending out infected emails.
Nothing to do really, just ignore them and hope that whomever it is gets
help!

Forget about it. Viruses routinely forge the "From" header on emails
they send out. They may be getting your address from somebody else's
address books, or even from newsgroup posts. There's nothing you can
do about it.

Lots of email virus scanners automatically send bounce messages like
this. But since nearly all virus-laden emails forge their headers,
those messages are merely pollution. If you have such a scanner, turn
the "bounce" function off!

Greetings --

It's quite possible that you're not the one infected with the
worm. The way many mass emailing worms work is that they send out
emails from the infected machine to every address it finds, and they
randomly select one of those found addresses to place in the
"from" fields. What this means is that someone else who has your
email address in his/her contact list is actually the infected party.
You might consider advising everyone with who you've recently
corresponded that they should all perform virus scans.
