There is a patch for Windows 2000 but nothing for XP

Are YOU getting the following error when you try to install Windows XP
Service Pack 1?
"Service Pack 1 Setup Error:
Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the
Cryptographic service is running on this computer"
Or
YOU are trying to install the Windows XP security patch 823980 - in
response to the msblast.exe worm and you are getting a similar error
message.

Rename the folder windows\system32\catroot2 and reboot. This will then
give you a fresh copy and you can delete the renamed one. Once you have
the patch installed, proceed to get - only - Q817287 and install it,
which should now be OK. It is itself the cure; you should then be able
to carry on with other updates, and the problem will not recur
