Virus Complication

I have a virus - Trojan.Linkoptimizer.b - that I am trying to remove. I have
run Norton Antivirus 2008 which found the virus but could not remove it "from
an unsupported file." During this problem, a window keeps popping up saying
that some Windows files have been changed and that I should put XP CD in and
restore the changed files. When I do this, I get a message that the files on
the CD are older than the files in the system.
I believe that these two problems are linked. Can someone help me?

As for the "files on the CD are older", this will happen if your CD does not
have the most recent service pack (SP) and you have upgraded your computer
to SP 2. The files on the CD have been replaced by the SP2 files and
Windows won't allow you to "downgrade" the program files in this manner.

Once you get your virus problem under control, you should search the
internet for instructions for slipstreaming SP2 onto Windows XP CD. Then
you could use the newly created slipstreamed install CD to fix Windows
problems.
