VirtualDub question - how do I do this, pls?

Hi, guys! I'm tearing my hair out again with a video problem. This
is one that has plagued me for months now though I have something more
concrete to go on.

I have an AVI video file that is 715+ megs in size. It's way to big
to burn onto CD esp. since I have all my autorun files and goodies to
go on there plus bonus stuff.

I was just told this by someone and was hoping some of you know VD
enough to understand what this person means:

"As to the encoding I've only used VirtualDub (and VirtualDubMod) and
am quite happy with it. If you set the encoding bit rate to 200kbs on
the DivX codec you get roughly the 80mb quality."

First off, how _does_ one set the "encoding bit rate to 200kbs" like
this person says as well as the DivX codec?? Also, do I re-save the
file into AVI format? I don't see any other file type anywhere listed
under any of the FILE > SAVE AS options available.

Thanks so much. If I can just learn how to do this, it would be
great.

Cheers!

If no luck here you might like to try...
rec.video.desktop

Thanks, I've tried them all (I've had this avi sitting on my computer
for several months now). Trying again, though.

Fitwell -

I need VirtualDub for Dummies but here are a couple of ideas.

Maybe you would get to this option (encoding bit rate) by clicking on Video,
Compression. Then select the DivX codec and click the Configure button.

Go to this webpage - http://www.codecpage.com/ -

and click the "DivX5, MS MPEG4" link on the left. Then in the page that
appears in the frame, scroll down and you will see a

and "DivX Video Codec Configuration" dialog.

You'll see a "Output video bitstream at _____ kilobit/second" option.

This may be what you're looking for.

You may also want to ask any VirtualDub questions at the VirtualDub forum
at:

http://virtualdub.everwicked.com/index.php

There is are forums for "Codec Discussion" and "Newbie Questions".

Good luck.

If you don't get an authoritative answer here:

alt.binaries.multimedia.erotica.d

I would suggest cutting the avi and putting it on two cd's.

Here's another option.
Download the free ver of TMPGEnc.
Re-render the AVI to MPG 1 NTSC or PAL (European format) VCD and you
can burn 800MB or 80 min.....which ever comes first. I have *over
burned * up to 803 MB on a 700MB CD w/ Nero.
You can watch the movie w/ WMP or on your stand alone DVD player.
If you need higher than 1150 bitrate you can always purchase the
TMPGEnc MPG 2 upgrade for SVCD and get up to a 2520 bitrate.
Most AVI files are gonna be less than 2520 bitrate so it would be an
over kill unless you need to back up your personal DVD(s)

Thanks!

Yes, many people mentioned about the VCD and overburning.

It turns out that by decreasing the screen size (via VIDEO > FILTERS,
I believe it was in VirtualDub) did the trick! Talk about not being
an intuitive thing! I haven't yet figured out the bitrate angle, but
since VirtualDub did such a splendid job on the avi without
significant loss of quality TO THE EYE, then I will probably go that
route for now until I figure things out better.

I burned the avi to a CD and still have plenty of room left over for
my special autorun program and other goodies. The 715meg file went
down to 481megs, so I was very pleased. Yet it still played on full
screen exceptionally well.

Thanks everyone!

At least SOME of an answer to the original post will be found in
using the right codecs for recompessing looooonnnggg .AVI files.
I have found that installing the K-Lite Codec collection (Google
for that), I now have the option (in Virtual Dub) to choose
Microsoft's Video 9 codec ... among the smallest compression
results. My original .AVI videos taken with my Pentax Optio S4
are reduced to about HALF the size using Video 9 compression
with no discernable degradation in quality.

Wow, thanks for that. And I've been needing the WMV9 codecs. The
ones I found, I believe on the MS site for developers, don't work
worth beans.

Some great Stargate WMV "music videos"** are being made that my v8
codecs can't handle on WMP6 so I've often suspected that they're from
v9 as other WMV files work perfectly. I don't know if this codec pack
will work, but it's worth a try.

Thanks for the great tip!

** Stargate music videos - mixing caps and piecing together a
slideshow type of presentation and adding music but a presentation in
music video style. Pretty kewl.

Actually, I just saw that they mix video clips with music! Totally

Thaks for this absolutely great tip! I could watch the videos just
fine now.

I found 3 versions to dl, a Basic, Standard and Full. I went right for
the full version and it came in at just under 8.5 megs. Not bad. And
you can pick and choose any or all the codecs to install. I later
came back and chose to add another one and it didn't uninstall what
had already been chosen before.

It can be found here:

Thanks once again!
