Virtual Memory too low

Hi,
Whilst i was using my computer i recieved a message in the task bar along
the lines of my Virtual memory is too low. I have noticed for the past couple
of weeks my computer has been running slower than normal, ever since i
installed a antivirus and firewall software. I am running a P4 1.8ghz and
226mb ram and 20gb hard disk. I just wanted to know what is this virtual
memory, why have i recieved this message, and how can i rectify it. I have
discovered i have 336mb allocated virtual memory, should i increase it?

Virtual memory is the memory allocated on the hard drive for overflow when
you run out of Random Access Memory (RAM)

Your best bet would be to add RAM if you can, rather than play with other
settings. I have 577 MB and I wish I could get more.

You should let Windows manage the pagefile.

Too simple minded a view. The OP may have no need at all for more.
There can be spurious reasons for such messages - see Problems section
at www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm
