virtual memory shortage/winsock/tcp/ip problem?

Hi, running XP home edition. Recently upgraded my video
card ATI7500 to an ATI8500DV, AGP adaptor. The upgrade was
successful and the video card is functioning just fine.
However, around the same time as the upgrade, i tink, i
started having problems with loading IE6. Sometimes part
of the page would come up, sometimes nadda. I checked with
Comcast and they verified i could ping out to a website so
i can get out. So, now, when i double-click IE6, my
virtual memory meter i have on the taskbar decends rapidly
to zero, then i get a message that VIRTUAL MEMORY is too
low, it asks to increase it, yes, it recovers. I can use
any other aspect of the workstation except IE6. The
technican at Comcast mentioned it was probably related to
Winsock, TCP/IP. Any ideas, suggestions, do you think it
was related to the video card upgrade. The unit is a
Systemax, 512mb memory, 80gig harddrive, Athlon chip
simulating a Pentium IV is it is fairly new. Thanks in
advance for any help, jim

Be sure you have the latest drivers for the card. Don't assume because it's
new the "out of box" drivers are the latest. Video drivers change rapidly
and you have no way of knowing if the included drivers are the latest
available.

Second, be sure your antivirus software has the latest definitions and run a
virus scan.

Other things to check:
If your system is clear of viruses, open Control Panel, open Administrative
Tools, open Event Viewer, look for errors corresponding to the crash, double
click the error, the information contained within may give a clue as to the
source of the problem.

Assuming you have an XP CD and not a recovery CD, place the XP CD in the
drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System Compatibility,"
the report it generates may point to problem hardware or software on your
system. If you do not have an XP CD, you can download this application
known as the Upgrade Advisor from the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp
Note: If you have access to a broadband connection it might be best to
download using that as this is a rather large download.

Check for the latest drivers for your other hardware as well especially your
soundcard and all peripherals connected to your system. No not use
Windows Update for this, go to the device manufacturer's web sites and if
you install updated drivers, ignore the message about drivers being unsigned
by Microsoft.
