John XP has a default of 1.5 times RAM to Virtual. But RAM alone doesn't
give you a fast PC.

You generally don't 'see' much imrpovement over 512Mb of RAM in most
applications as the PC generally will not SWAP out any files because there
sufficient RAM not to need movement of Data.

It is only for BIG files such as graphics and movies where this will help.
Don't forget that a DVD movie is made up of 4 or 5 files of 1.2 - 1.5 GB. So
there, even with so much RAM there will be a bit of Swapping happening.

If you want more throughput, you need to bring other aspects into balance.
You need fast Front Side Bus speed and Fast access and data transfer rate off
the Hard Drive [SATA drives help]. If it's video [graphic or movies]
data/applications that you're using, a faster graphics processor will help.
