Hi,
I have a PC with 1024 MB Ram - WinXP Home and when I try to run a
software I get a pop up window telling me I need 3 MB free virtual
memory to run the software. I tried to run it in W95 - Win98 - WinNT
mode ( changing settings in the properties of the .exe )
I tried at work on an older PC with 256 MB Ram - Win2000 and
everything works fine.
I don't want to remove 512 Mb in order to run this software, is there
a simple way to solve this problem ( msconfig ? ) without modifying
completely my actual configuration.
Regards

Hi, Philippe!
No matter how much RAM you have got, you will still need a bit of
VIRTUAL MEMORY (or SWAP file) to run a number of applications,
especially games.
Also do not forget that RAM is stored in memory banks while VIRTUAL
MEMORY is stored in a reserved area of your hard drive. RAM and VIRTUAL
MEMORY are used by applications for their own specific needs according
to the way they have been programmed. You cannot make an application
that has benn programmed to use VIRTUAL MEMORY to run without it.
You must allow for some VIRTUAL MEMORY on your system. The best is
always to leave Windows manage your SWAP file (VIRTUAL MEMORY).
In this very newsgroup, you'll find clear explanations as to what
exactly is VIRTUAL MEMORY and why it is necessary to have some. Look
for the "Re: Swap file in own partition???" thread.
Here are some extracts:
"The page file is the subject of more misunderstanding and rumours than
almost anything else in Windows. (Remember all the conspiracy theories
surrounding index.dat?) Here's a good introduction to the page file,
including some solid ideas on how to optimize it:

Another solid resource is this one, written by MVP Jim Eshelman:

There are a number of enlightening remarks on this page too:

Here is an extract:
"How can I adjust the "Page File" or "Virtual Memory" settings? This is
valid for Windows XP Home and Pro. Can you get rid of the page file?
Yes and no. If you have a boat load of memory (greater than 512 MB) you
may be able to function just fine.. Some games require a certain amount
of swap space to be created to even run, no matter how much RAM is
available. Also, under certain conditions, sound cards go crazy (or
does not function) in some games with no swap file (and oddly enough,
Age of Empires 2)."
