Virtual Memory low

My computer has been FINE until last night. When I have a
word document, windows media player, and aol instant
messenger open simultaneously, my computer slows down and
displays a message saying "your virtual memory is low"
and mentions something about "increasing my virtual
memory paging file". How do I go about rectifying this?

Add RAM - which is the best thing to do - or don't have so many programs
open at the same time.

Same with me. I've been multi-tasking with no problems until a couple days
ago - now things are getting slowwww and the VM warning comes up.

Perhaps an MS Win Update screwed with the memory manager??

What about the swap file? Where is it and can I delete it?

As one of the other messages said add memmory if you can.
With that beeing said, If you have a partion on your
harddrive try adding a second Virtual memory page file to
that partion. also try setting the page File Min ANd Max
to the same size it is recomended you use 384mb for both.
Experiment with the size until you get right results.

Note If you followed the above suggestion the warning
should not apply.

You may also want to defragment your page file:
disable the page file " Your computer will want to
restart, let it " When windows restarts dont start any
other program and defragment that drive.

Warning: If you run out of memory while the page file is
inactive windows will crash.

this will defragment your VM page File something windows
defrag does'nt normally do. Once defrag is complete reset
your page file and let windows restart again.this will
help considerable on most fragmented systems.

Last but not least you can try toning down windows special
effect such drop shadow, Animations or if you are using
32bit collor try setting it to 16bit etc...

Hope this helps!

If you don't have 512 megs of RAM then you need to get more. RAM is
very cheap nowdays. Also, get rid of AOL and get a life! :-(
