I have a compaq that I have upgraded from windows me to
windows xp home. I keep getting a virtual low memory
message when starting my computer. I do a system restore
and that works for a while, and then memory message comes
back. How can I get rid of it? I have 256 ram and 40
gig hardrive. Thanks in advance.

Kate,

Check for spyware. Use HijackThis, Spybot S&D, and expert advice at
SWI Forums (all free). Complete instructions are available at:
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=5187

Get Process Explorer (free) from <http://www.sysinternals.com/>, to
provide more detail than Task Manager. Get Startup Monitor and
Startup Control Panel (free) from <http://www.mlin.net/> to provide
control over what programs are started automatically when you startup.

How often do you restart the computer? Which programs do you leave
running all the time? How big is your paging file?

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Hidden files?

How to View System and Hidden Files in Windows

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? What file system? FAT32 or? In Windows Explorer right click on your C drive and select Properties. Has your hard disk been partitioned?

You must have a minimum of 15% free space on each and every drive / partition!

Have you allowed Windows to manage your memory without the introduction of any memory managers. Memory managers can lead to poor system performance!

How good is your housekeeping?

1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.

2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.

3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup.

4. Run Disk Defragmenter.
