does anyone know how to view word documents in XP? mine
comes up in wordpad and that's no good. i need to see
the file in word format. there's no conversion process
that i know of. i was sent a word document, my corrected
research paper, and can't open it to correct it. this is
a problem between word and XP. no one with word can read
my xp files and vice versa. i want to upgrade to the
professional version but don't want to pay the $200 to
upgrade. i'd rather have the version that more advanced
computer users can use. XP home is too restricting.

Neither Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional
includes any Microsoft Office programs, such as Microsoft Word.

Microsoft Word is a program that you'll have to purchase.

Microsoft Works Suite 2005 (also includes Microsoft Word)

($99.95 - $20.00 rebate = $79.95) (good value)

Microsoft Word Viewer is a freeware program that allows users who do not
own Microsoft Word to view and print documents that were created in Word:

Carey: I didn't realize that. Thanks for the info. Is
MS Works Suite a more advanced SW version? Can I upgrade
over my XP without effecting any XP settings, i.e.
printer setup, etc.? It is more for an advanced user?
Also with Excel, I need the real thing. I wouldn't mind
buying it if I knew that it would allow me to do what I
need to do as an advanced user. Thanks.

Windows XP "Home" has zip to do with your problem. Windows XP Pro will
not change your ability to exchange, edit or read Word documents. IF you
want Word, you have to buy it and install it.

Microsoft Works suite is a software application. It is not an
upgrade to the Windows XP operating system. Installing it
will not affect Windows XP.

Installing it will so affect the operating system, as will any program you add to it. You think it doesn't use any of the system's resources, or space to use?

I know in your MS XP dream world, XP will seemingly have endless drive space and memory to give, no matter how little of either is installed, but it doesn't work that way, now does it?

Works contains Word? I didn't think so. A colleague recently bought a
new system with Works preinstalled and was making files with an, I
think, wks extension.

For once I can agree with Carey--when he said it won't
affect XP it was obviously in response to the
dimwitted OP's concerns about overwriting his data and
settings by installing Works.

An "advanced user" of what? Controlled substances? Google
for Open Office--a free office suite that will read and
write Excel and Word formats.

Thanks.
