viewing applications/movies on TV screen

Have a connection from my computer to my TV and although I can see the
desktop on the TV, I can't see applications running on the PC. For example
if I bring up pictures or view an MPG or AVi etc. file I want to see it on
the TV - does anyone know how I can change my setting to have this work???
