"View workgroup computers" - only the "local" machine appears

I am trying to connect two computers via a Speedtouch 585(i) v6 "Residential
Wireless Gateway" (combined router/modem). One machine is a desktop
connecting via ethernet, the other a laptop connecting via wireless. If I
click on "View workgroup computers" each machine can only see itself. The
desktop connection is clearly working to the extent that it can communicate
with the internet. The laptop cannot connect to the internet (possibly a
separate problem) but if I "View network connections", it is said to be
"Connected, Shared and Firewalled"

Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?

Geoff,

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. There are several
other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this
article with an open mind.

We could look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from each computer, and
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):
