setting up a network with a router

I have been trying to set up a home network with my desktop, laptop, and a
Netgear wireless router. The desktop is connected via LAN cable and the
laptop via wireless. The router is then connected to a DSL modem. Both
systems are running XP Pro. I have run the Network Setup Wizard on both
machines multiple times, making sure they have the same workgroup name but
can't seem to connect to one computer from the other.

When I look in "My Network Places", all I have on both machines is a
"Residential Gateway" and nothing else that shows that my computers are on
the same network. From the desktop, when i click "view workgroup computers"
an error message shows up saying i need an administrator (i am an
administrator) and the laptop does actually show the desktop. However, as far
as I can tell, i can't share any files, folders, or printers. How do I access
files on one computer from the other, and fix my network?

Have you enable file and printer sharing? Have you create the same username with the same password on the both computers? use net view \\remotehostname to find the system error. This step by step troubleshooting may help,

troubleshooting is not accessible error Troubleshooting step by step:. A. Is a firewall blocking the LAN traffic? ... Use net view IP and net share. D. Do you have the Name Resolution issue? ...
