View images in zip files?

B

BobZ

Is there a nice Image Viewer or other program that allows viewing of images
in zip files without the need to extract them? I have a large collection of
wallpapers and landscape images that I would like to organize into zip
files.

Thanks,

Usually, your zip program will use the standard file association (as set
in Windows Explorer) and if you double click an image file within the
archive, it will open in the appropriate program. Regretably, I don't
know of a viewer program that supports drag & drop from a .zip program -
it would be a nice arrangement. The best I can think of is just
double-clicking from within the zip program.

In your case you would right-click the zip file in explorer, Quick View
Plus, then right-click the file listed in the viewer and select View This
File.
If I understand what you are describing correctly, any file
archiver that I've ever seen, such as Winzip (shareware) and Ultimatezip
(freeware), does pretty much the same thing in exactly the same manner:
In explorer, right-click on filename; Open; double-click on archived
filename; file is extracted to a temporary directory and is displayed by
its associated application. Takes a lo-o-ot less time to do it than to
type it. Only thing is that compressed formats such as mp3 and jpeg
compress little-to-none when archived but, of course, there are reasons
aside from space-saving for archiving files.

No; the archiving utility such as WinZip or Ultimatezip does that.
The target file will be "viewed" by its associated application, which
does not have to be Irfanview. Some archiving utilities support their
own internal associations so the one's viewer-of-choice may be used
instead of Windows' registry association.
I have version 3.80. How do I make it open and view zipped pictures in a
slide show format?
I don't think you do. Closest I saw in the help file is how to
create a autostart slideshow CD.

Which ones? Any freeware programs?

It ain't free but boy, is it good - Quick View Plus.

Unless you were purposely trying to look like an idiot, a freeware
newsgroup is about people finding *freeware*.

I have version 3.80. How do I make it open and view zipped pictures in a
slide show format?

I have version 3.80 and the "off topic" zip program mentioned above and I just
did it
and here's how:

I will assume that you know how to open the zip file in the Zip Classic
Mode so that all of the image files are shown. Select all of the images
that you want in you slideshow and click on the "view" option at the
top. You should now see a"View" dialog box to choose what program you
want to open the images in. If Irfanview is not your associated
program then search for it by clicking the small folder icon at the bottom of
the dialog box. Once you have found and selected Irfanview.exe, click
"view" located at the upper right of the dialog box. All of the images
will now be loaded into Irfanview. After all the images have been
loaded into Irfanview, select "thumbnails" from the "File" drop down
menu. The images will now be loaded as thumbnails. Now click the
thumbnails you want in you slideshow. Once you have the thumbnails
selected, at the top of the thumbnail window, click on "File" and select
"Start slideshow with selected thumbs". Your slideshow should now begin.
Hope this helps. This works a lot faster than it sounds, of course, the time
will also depend on the number of images you want to show :). Hope you
understand this. This should work with most other zip programs as well.

Thanks to all who have responded to my quest.

I have found 2 freeware viewers that will do what I want, supposedly, but I
have not yet installed either one of them because they are kind of big
programs.

After a bit of playing around, I finally got this to work correctly. The
trick was to make sure that in the configuration of Irfanview 3.80 that only
one instance of Irfanview is active, then it worked OK. It does unzip the
files to whatever temporary folder you have set in Irfanview, and then it
deletes them on close, though.

Thanks,

Correction: It does unzip the files to whatever temporary folder you have
set in "WinZip", and then it deletes them on close, though.

Sorry,
