Good stuff; I think I'm gonna switch from Picasa 2. It is that good, and
free too. Love it.

Just trying it properly for the first time myself, and I agree - very
nice indeed.

On a detail point: I like the facility to show file information while
running a slideshow (or just browsing), by popping up a window on the
right. In particular, I want to see JPG Comments, and FastStone
includes that in the large panel of data. But ideally I would like to
display those comments at the top, with filename and date. Do you know
if that's possible?

In theory, as per the discussion yesterday in my earlier thread
'Irfanview JPG Comments', IrfanView can accomplish that. However, as I
posted, it doesn't seem to work. I added $C in the File | Slideshow |
Show Text box, but IV doesn't display it. Nor Full Screen. Nor even if
'$C' is the only entry. It's as if IV ignores that parameter (maybe
others too - I haven't checked).

The idea of bumping the screen borders to see the autohiding
menues is good and useful, but the author seems to have
ignored the fact that a lot of people already use autohiding
menues, like the quick launch and system tray bar, at the bottom of the
screen. And that makes it impossible to use the bottom
bump in this program. The quick launch bar comes up instead.

This can be solved by letting the user decide which sides and
corners he wants to use for what purpose.

There are 4 sides and 4 corners on a computer screen which can
be used to show autohiding menues or tool bars.

I hope the author(s) of the faststone viewer will make this
configurable in the future.

Otherwise it is a very impressive and useful program.

Roger,
Why don't you send them an email and make that suggestion? Sounds
like a good one to me and they probably would welcome it.

This problem has been fixed in version 2.26beta, downloadable from

Thanks Larry, but I don't see how it's fixed? As I said, I'd like to
have any JPG Comment '...at the top, with filename and date.'

Ideally, I'd like to be able to choose what I want displayed there,
from a selection of fields. First thoughts are Filename,
Path/Filename, Date Taken, JPEG Comment, Size in KB, Date Modified.
Oh, and sequence number as shown at present of course.

BTW, updates (like this beta) over-write any existing settings! That
Favorites feature is neat; I just lost the dozen I added this morning

Are you using version 2.26Beta? It works for me. I enter a JPEG
comment into the image and in the Slideshow Settings screen enter
($C)($I) and I get the filename and comment displayed when I run the
slideshow. You can also add freeform text along with variables.

Path/filename, size and sequence number aren't available, but the
other fields are. The variables are listed in the Slideshow Settings
screen, when you click Show text, then the "..." at the right of that
line, and click the pull-down tab for <Insert a Variable>.

Zoner Media Explorer 5 does most of what you want, and has many other
excellent features, but I found the transitions abrupt and one can't
suppress display of the variable name in slideshows (e.g., it reads

Yeah, I noticed that, about overwriting previous settings.( I've
been told they will be adding a "Create slideshow EXE" function, which
will eliminate the need to wrestle with a settings screen when you
want to start a slideshow. Can't wait for that feature!

These are super-responsive and very capable developers. Their
FastStone 4in1 browser is terrific--it can capture web pages that
require scrolling to see the full page, amongst many other things.

Cheers,
Larry

Thanks a bunch - penny finally dropped! Now getting JPG comments
exactly as required. Very nice facility, being able to adjust their
position and font.

As you may have seen from my post

Subject: FastStone Image Viewer - lost XP Taskbar
Date: Sat, 08 Oct 2005

when I first installed the program I'm pretty sure I didn't have that
problem. I could see both my permanent XP Taskbar *and* the FS pop-up.
But I now have the converse: I get *only* the FS pop-up. What version
of FS Image Viewer do you have please?

graphic programs, he is my freeware guru.
But I Love "Irfanview" call me old fashioned

I emailed the author about this 5 days ago, but so far no reply.
