not free for commercial use ... is this better than Vallen Jpegger or than
Irfan? :-?

IrfanView and XnView is not free for commercial use ether.

Faststone is better in some areas and in some areas IrfanView is better,
the same goes for all of the freeware image viewers.

It also allows viewing of .raw files. :)

Though one cannot rotate them. :-(

That depends on what you want to do. Jpegger is by far one of the
best, if not the best, graphics viewers if one has many thousands of
pictures to look through IMO. The FastStone program freezes my
system if I allow it to try and catalogue all my graphics files. IV
isn't much better.

The author of Jpegger is also a very nice guy. He listens to user's
requests. Compare that to IV. I asked Irfan many years ago to consider
adding a re-open file facility to his program and he wasn't
interested. Though many competing programs have such
a feature.

Regards, John.

John,
IrfanView has a "ReOpen" thingy
File -> ReOpen.

IrfanView has had it for at least the 3 last versions.

Hi CoMa,

Well, if it worked it would be handy. It doesn't however on my system.
If I open eg. picture.jpg and then close IrfanView then when I re-open
it "ReOpen" is greyed out. I cannot select it. I am using 3.97.

What is even worse is that I cannot see how to close a graphics file
without also closing IrfanView. I don't see any "close" on the file
menu.

Regards, John.

Go to "Edit" then "Delete" and you can "reopen"

Hey John,

Andrew of FastStone is also very responsive. He has made several changes at
my request. Try him out!

Irfan is as stubborn as a mule. May as well ask a brick to fix something.

Boy .. that's an understatement! No wonder people are
abandoning his product for such as FastStone, XNView,
SlowView, etc. Sooner or later, the competition will have all the same
features. Fast Stone is real good.

Thanks. Sounds like "reopen" isn't reopen at all. It is undelete. If I
ever need that then it could be handy. I don't expect to need it
however. I DO expect to constantly need to reopen graphics I have
closed though.

Actually, Irfanview's "reopen" command reloads the saved version of the
current image. It's for after you change an image, but want to go back
to the version on disk,

That is usually called "revert".

Yes, this is an example of a software programmer using a term which is
commonly understood to mean one thing for his/her own, different
purpose, a practice which unfortunately occurs all too often. "Reopen"
is almost universally understood to mean opening a file which had
previously been loaded, but has since been closed. It would probably be
clearer if the function in IrfanView were in the Edit menu instead of
the File menu, and called something like "Undo All", or "Discard All
Changes", or , as you suggested, "Revert", or something similarly
explanatory.

Many software developers speak English as their 2nd or 3rd language, so I
guess it's forgivable. :)

I think it would be a funny thread, just listing a few "mis-translations".
