I let it loose on a dir with more than 7000 images.

It took a long time before it had created an index
and could be used normally. Half an hour.
Otherwise it is a great image viewer - effects processor.
If you have reasonable numbers of images in your folders
this may not be a problem.

Firegraphic 6 is a lot faster, it takes two seconds before
the thumbnails are visible and you can scroll to 70% of
the file list and it shows thumbnails for that part of the
list.

Total Commander is as quick as Firegraphic.
Immediately useful even before it has built an index.
Firegraphic 6 is freeware but not so easy to find.

Strange, Roger.

I did a test myself with v. 2.27 beta 2. A directory with 957 mb and
7.600 pictures: Less than four minutes and all thumbnails scrollable.

My is on. But I created the directory especially for this test so it was
not in FastStones database.

I am using win98se, with 512MB ram, 2.5 GHz celeron,
with winamp and other stuff running in the background.

Faststone tries to service the user while it is indexing,
but it looks like the priority for the user service is too
low, so I have to wait for half a minute for a picture
to show fullscreen after I clicked it, while the indexing
is going on.

Could be something with win98se, or, who knows.. :)

Mine too.

Every time I start the program I have to wait while it is

"Retrieving information, I think it says.

I miss a stop button to be able to change directory
before it checks all the 7000 pictures in this dir.

As soon as it gets a folder with a more reasonable number
of pictures it works without problems.

I wrote to the author and asked for settable background
color so I didn't have to use bright white as background,
for the thumbnails, and now I can set a
comfortable light gray instead.
Thanks to the author.

I use version 2.22 so we are using different versions.

Did you try to use it during those 4 minutes?
I tried to use it during indexing and it worked but was very slow.
This probably made the indexing slower too.

I think the priorities should be set so the user can start working
directly, while the indexing goes on in the background with
a lower priority.

I guess I have 5,000 pics, but no more than a hundred in each folder. I
have never noticed a lag.

I use black. :)

Yes, Andrew is very responsive to requests. I just hope he doesn't add a
million features and try to make FSIV do everything in the world at the
expense of quality.

Sorry, no. I only scrolled down to keep up with the thumbnails as they
were appearing.
