Video_TS DVD files won't play for some reason?

I've never had a problem playing Video_TS media DVD files with WMP10 untill
last night.

When I try to play dvd videos using these files from my hard drive, the
video freezes, skips for a second, and then refreezes. I've tried
redownloading WMP10, and this didn't work. I also checked videos which I had
watched previously, and those wouldn't play either. I also checked videos on
two different hard drives, and both did the same thing, the video freezes. I
am able to play the files on RealPlayer, so I now the files are playable.

Can anyone give some help on why all of a sudden I can't play these files
without it freezing? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

ok, I saw this just a couple threads away, I apologize if this is a reduntant
question which always comes up...it's just that it has always worked with no
problems and suddenly quit working.

I hope this info helps:

"What media player? What version?"

Windows Media Player 10

"What format the file types that skip?"

The folders are Video_TS. It says the file types are PowerDVD, BUP, IFO.

"Is this with every type of video clip?"

What is wierd, is that some will play, but most will not. I've watched some
of them before with no problems, but now they skip/freeze. Is PowerDVD
actually the file type?

"The spec of the PC?"

Dell XPS Gen 2, 3.2GHz; Win XP SP2 Home

"Have you tried closing applications
that maybe a drain on your system?"

Yes, the CPU usage is low when trying to watch.

"Have you tried updating XP/DVD decoders/Codecs?"

I went in to the automatic update in WMP and checked to update, but not sure
how to do it manually.

I hope this helps. This is mind boggeling to me why it just quit working.
Thanks.

Read through this troubleshooter and download the tool that will identify
the decoders installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/errors.aspx

This is an execellent guide, by Marc Liron - Microsoft MVP In Digital Media
http://www.updatexp.com/codec-for-windows-media-player-10.html
Be sure to follow the link to download Gspot - this tool will identify
the codecs required for the specific files being problematic.

Is there any other problems?
Any error messages?
Have you installed/Uninstalled anything recently?

Here is what I got following the links you provided:

Docoder: Cyberlink Video/SP Decoder for Dell ver. 3.5.0.3226; decoder file
name: clvsd.ax

With Gspot, "DirectShow claims to be able to play the file".
The file type: MPEG2_Video
Splitter: MPEG-2 Demultiplexer
Video Decoder: Cyberlink (above)
Video Post Processer: Overlay Mixer2
Video Rederer: Video Renderer
Audio Decoder: Cyberlink Audio Decoder for Dell
Default Directsound Device: Audio Rederer

There are other problems. For the files which will play with WMP, there is
no audio. The files which freeze then skip, there is slow audio.

The only things I have installed is Yahoo Music Engine, which did do a scan
of all my music files. And I installed EMC Retrospect to back up files.

Gspot says it can play the file. If I use the Play button with Gspot with
the files it says it can play, the files don't play right and freeze up.

Some of the files have MD5's which can verify if the files intergrety are
intact, and the files pass the verification. So I'd think the files are ok.

I have this strange feeling my computer is about to crash. It seems when
odd ball things like this start happening, it goes.

If you have any more advice, please let me know. Thanks decoder!

I have no knowledge of Yahoo Music Engine, but do you feel
that there is a direct correlation with this installation and the
problems you are having with mpeg2 playback? I suspect
that there is? There is plenty of info concerning YME
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-6450_7-6224481-1.html

It transpires that default settings are basically a hijack of
file associations unless the user pays attention and discerns
what should and shouldn't be changed?

This is the site for troubleshooting with the Yahoo! Music Engine:
http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/music/...ing/index.html

Are you aware if the problems occurred after the installation
of Yahoo Music Engine?
Did you create a system restore point prior to installing YME?

If so, and you are sure of a correlation, then I suggest you Uninstall
Yahoo Music Engine, and reset back to the nearest restore point
prior to installation:.

Start/Settings/Control Panel/
select "Add/Remove Programs."
Then select "Yahoo! Music Engine"
and click the "Remove" button.
Click the "Next" button, then "Finish."

Now to select a restore point to when your mpeg files
played without problems:

Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools,
and then click System Restore
click Restore my computer to an earlier time
(if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
From the calender select a date prior to the installation
of Yahoo Music Engine, a restore point may have
been created at the time of installation and if so will
be entitled as such, select that restore point.

Confirm Restore Point Selection
click Next.
System Restore restores the selected XP configuration,
and then restarts the computer.
Ensure all is now running OK
If still problematic post back, and we can UNDO that restoration
and start all over again.............

If all is OK, you can now REinstall Yahoo Music Engine, but do it
correctly and carefully:
Goto the Yahoo! Music Engine home page: http://music.yahoo.com/musicengine
Click the "Download Now" button.
Unistalling and reinstalling the Yahoo! Music Engine is free,
and does not affect your Yahoo! Music Unlimited account.
You will simply need to sign in using your Yahoo! ID at the completion
of the install process; you will be prompted to add in the music files
already on your computer, and your subscription music (if any) will be
automatically populated. But be careful about file associations!

Conversely, if you are 100% confident that the video playback
problems were there before you installed YME, post back and
we'll try another avenue.

I uninstalled Yahoo Music Engine, and I restored to a point the day before I
installed YME. And it did the trick. I am able to play those MPEG2 files
now. Thanks decoder for the help. I now also know how to check files with
Gspot. I'll let you know if anything else comes up.
