Video Thumbnails, WMP, and other MAJOR slow down areas

OK, if I can't get these Vista problems fixed, the Wow ENDS next week!

My biggest problem with Vista is how long it takes to cache the video
thumbnails when looking at a folder full of videos (maybe 20-30 videos). It
seriously takes up to 5 minutes! Even worse, during that time, the computer
is practically unusable! It's almost as though it has crashed! I almost
dread opening a folder full of videos for fear of this! I would just turn
off the thumbnails, but it's hard to tell the videos apart without it! I had
no problems with thumbnails in XP. They were instantaneous! Who cares about
scalable thumbnails if they take 5 minutes to load EVERY TIME I OPEN THE
FREAKIN FOLDER!!!

My 2nd biggest problem with Vista is with WMP 11. When I try to open a file
(both music and video, though video is worse) it takes 30 seconds to a minute
to load! Again, this was practically instantaneous in XP. Tack this on to
the time it takes to open the folder the video is saved in and you've got a 6
minute process to load a freakin video! This is ridiculous!

OK, my final major problem is actually within Office 2007 on Vista (I'm too
afraid to install it on my XP laptop to see how it runs on XP).
Specifically, my problem is with PowerPoint 2007. I do a lot of timed slides
and the timing is crucial to the fraction of a second. Unfortunately,
PowerPoint runs so slow that the timing is EXTREMELY screwed up. My only
solution to this is to use my laptop and Office 2003 until the problem is
fixed.

These are just the major problems which are driving me out of my skull.
Does anyone have any ideas about solving any of these problems? I've been
patiently dealing with these problems since Vista launch. I'm going back to
XP if I can't solve these problems by next week.

Computer Specs:
Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
2 GB Ram
500 GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon X850 (AGP)
Sound Blaster X-Fi
Window Vista Ultimate (for now, but the countdown back to XP has started!)

I'm pretty sure you've installed incompatible codec packs or the bloated
Nero7 suite which comes with codecs too.

Bill,

I do have Nero 7 installed. Will simply uninstalling it fix the problem?
Also, how do I change the codec packs to the Vista default?

Better Yet, here is a list of audio and video codecs and plugins I have.
What are and how can I delete the problem codecs?

It's really difficult to 'delete' codecs properly, which is one reason why
codec packs are noxious...

You have a really huge amount of codecs. What had you installed? I see a
really old version of DivX (extremel suspect - get at least their latest
version), Nero, Pinnacle, and Intervideo... generally most of those look out
of date and in need of updates.

Why do you have so many MPEG2 decoders installed? Had you installed codec
packs or something on this system? It almost looked like something stomped
on the system MP3 decoder too. That's kind of hard to tell from "here" but
....

What had you installed? No out of box Vista system would or could look like
this. =(

Hi Zach,

I think you've helped me in the past. Thanks for all your help.

I do have Pinnacle Studio 10, Intervideo WinDVD, and Nero 7 installed. I
have some several other audio and video creation suites installed as well
which could explain all the codecs. Before simply reverting back to XP, I
may try just reinstalling Vista from scratch and seeing if I have these
problems on a fresh install with video and music files. From there, I may be
able to weed out the problem programs. Do you have any suggestions about
programs I should definitely NOT install???

As for PowerPoint 2007, I don't know if the codecs could be causing the slow
down there or not. I use timed synchronization for music lryics and the
program runs so slow that the timing is off.

***One other question . . . of the problems I listed in the original post,
are any of them common or known problems others are experiencing in Vista or
do they all seem to be a result of software/codecs installed on my computer?
This will make a big difference in deciding my next step.

Any help you can give me is appreciated. Let me know if I can provide you
with any more info.

Thanks

Anyone know where I can get a Sharp G.726 Audio Codec for Vista to use with
Windows media player?

Starting new threads for new issues makes things much easier to track. =)

Have you talked with Sharp here? I believe they'd be the ones who would
need to deliver a Vista-compatible codec. I don't have anything in my
personal notes about any status on that, and I don't see that they and I've
talked (not necessary, but Tim often loops me in to help). I see their VFW
and their DirectShow implementation - I don't know which one -
http://www.sharp.co.jp/viewcam/download/g726_download.html
contains, but that package would be my first starting point if I were you.
If that doesn't work, you would want to contact Sharp about whether they
were going to make a Vista Media Foundation compatible version of their
codec available. If that puzzles them, they'd need to contact Microsoft...
we've worked with them before.
